There's more fall-out from the announcement of
John Neschling's departure from
the Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo (Osesp). French critic Alain Lompech from Le Monde
provides an absolute rave review of Neschling's legacy as conductor and (especially) as music director in
São Paulo, comparing his orchestral development to that of George Szell in Cleveland and Simon Rattle in Birmingham. He concludes:
Daqui a 20 anos, daqui a 50 anos, o nome de John Neschling será conhecido como o de um músico que realizou um trabalho excepcional no Brasil, o mais excepcional desde Villa-Lobos.
If I understand this correctly, Lompech guesses that in the future when one thinks of musical development in Brazil, Neschling's name will come only after Villa-Lobos's. That is high praise indeed!
Meanwhile, Neschling has been replaced by Yan Pascal Tortelier:

ReplyDeleteThe French critic Alain Lompech received a cash amount exceeding 20,000 euros from Neschling, for his part as a juror in the "infamous" Villa Lobos piano competition 2006, already considered one of the most corrupt music competition in recent history (according to the NY Times and other publications). Mr. Lompech even had the nerve to write a rave review about the said competition for Le Monde, praising it and denying any negative rumors.. (so much for good, clean French journalism..). He and Neschling collaborated on some other projects. Who knows what else prompted the critic to write about his good friend..
ReplyDeleteI'm a tourist and have been listening to the orchestra the last few days. OSESP orchestra is amazing. Just fantastic.
ReplyDeleteNeschling was a tyrannous conductor, but he made the OSESP as it is today. For sure Brazil's music has a great debt with he. But there are much others more importante than him, specially at popular music. See Tom Jobim, as example. I don't know how international press publish the fact, but he was dismissed because he called the governor of São Paulo a fascist. Today I saw a news that the brazilian government is creating a National Company of Opera, and Neschling will be the lead conductor.
ReplyDeleteJohn Neschiling suks! Tyrannous and highly egocentric, he may have done something to raise OSESP in the past but actual musicians in OSESP all agree that it is a relief to have him out. His methods were inhuman and coercitive! If he called São Paulo's State Governor a fascist, he should look himself at the mirror or be declared completely insane.
