Villa-Lobos - Um Clássico Popular is a 2009 CD by the Quinteto Villa-Lobos. These are clever arrangements of Villa's greatest hits. The Quinteto Villa-Lobos are: Rubem Schuenck (flute), Luis Carlos Justi (oboe), Paulo Sergio Santos (clarinet), Philip Doyle (horn) and Aloysio Fagerlande (bassoon).

The Villa-Lobos Concert Locations database includes a long list of cities where about 15 years' worth of Villa-Lobos concerts have taken place. Five new locations have just been added, thanks to the new tour of Africa by the Quinteto Villa-Lobos:

• Tunisia: Cartago
• Botswana: Gabarone
• Namibia: Windhoek
• Mozambique: Maputo
• Kenya: Nairobi

Villa-Lobos- um clássico popular

The Quinteto Villa-Lobos launches its new CD this weekend at the Auditório do Ibirapuera in São Paulo. The CD, entitled "Villa-Lobos- um clássico popular", presents popular VL works - including BB#2, #4, and #5, arranged for wind quintet.

After the May 17th event, the group goes on a long road-trip in Brazil to promote the CD, visiting Belo Horizonte (May 23), Florianópolis (June 27), Porto Alegre (July 10), Curitiba (October 23-24), Campinas, and Salvador. Watch for more information on the Quinteto VL website and blog.

Another Nonetto post

It's amazing what comes up on the web when you keep digging. I had seen a reference to the CD "Villa-Lobos em Paris", conducted by Gil Jardim, but the track list missed out the most important piece, the Nonetto. Here's the disc on the Brazilian music retailer Causa Sonora.

Jardim, it turns out, wrote the book O Estilo Antropofágico de Heitor Villa-Lobos, which I talked about in the previous post. He conducts an impressive group of musicians:

So, another disc with the Nonetto shows up, just when I'm complaining the loudest about not having one at hand.
