Today is the 50th anniversary of the death of Villa-Lobos: November 17, 1959. Villa-Lobos lovers are celebrating his music with special concerts, conferences, and exhibitions around the world: in Rio, Sao Paulo, New York, Luxembourg, and Paris. But in Brazil the date is being especially remembered, and not just in the classical music press. The newspaper page above, featuring a great Villa-Lobos caricature by Baptistao, is from yesterday's O Estado de Sao Paulo (November 16, 2009). ReplyDeleteWe celebrated Villa-Lobos in Seattle with a concert that included 15 of his works arranged for a small jazz chamber ensemble. You can read more at http://www.stevegriggsmusic.com/seresta.htm. I will put on concerts next March 3 and November 20 with more of his music.
